Five Tips for Completing the FAFSA
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid

It's FAFSA season!  Everyone who is even considering attending college should complete a FAFSA. Filing the FAFSA is easier than ever when you follow these tips.
1. Get an FSA ID now!

The FSA ID is the user name and password students will use to access all Federal Student Aid websites, including FAFSA.gov. All students need an FSA ID. Creating an FSA ID takes about 10 minutes, so we recommend getting an FSA ID ahead of time. One parent of a dependent student will also need to create an FSA ID to sign the FAFSA.
Go to fsaid.ed.gov to create an FSA ID. Use FAME's FSA ID Information Tracking Sheet to keep track of your FSA ID information.

2. File your FAFSA at FAFSA.gov.

This is the official FAFSA website. Filing the FAFSA is FREE! Don't pay to file the FAFSA or use any other website to file your FAFSA.
3. Know your college's financial aid deadline.

Colleges have different financial aid deadlines. Be sure to submit your FAFSA before your college's priority filing deadline. Not meeting deadlines could result in missing out on thousands of dollars in financial aid!
4. Estimate your income.

Don't wait to file the FAFSA until your federal income taxes are complete. Estimate using your information from the previous year, last pay stub, or W-2 form. Once you have filed your taxes, update the information on your FAFSA, ideally by using IRS Data Retrieval.
5. File your FAFSA every year!

Each year you have to file the FAFSA to be considered for financial aid. After the first year, filing the FAFSA is even easier since much of your information is carried forward and only needs to be updated.
Want more information?

If you have questions or need assistance, FREE help is available. Talk to your school counselor, the financial aid office at the college you want to attend, or contact us at FAME. FAME offers FAFSA In-Person Help Sessions across the state and online help. Watch our overview video and read our FAFSA FAQs.
