Do you think that every student here at Bonny Eagle High School

should feel safe, welcome, and respected for who they are?

The civil rights team does. But we know that in every school

community, there are things that happen so that not all students feel this way.

This is a problem, but you can be a part of the solution. You can join

the BEHS civil rights team!

We believe that bias, prejudice, and hate have no place in our school.

We can do better than that! We can celebrate our differences and work

together to create the kind of school community we all want, where

everyone truly belongs.

If this sounds like something you might want to be a part of, please

contact Mrs. Hayden for more information OR join us on Tuesdays,

after school in room 308.

Thank you! The civil rights team looks forward to working with all

of you this year!

September 16 –

The Constitution has endured with relatively few changes.  The Bill of Rights was added early on and then 17 more amendments were added over time.  Two important changes contained in the Bill of Rights are the 4th and 5th amendments.

The 4th amendment states that people have the right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures and search warrants must be based upon probable cause.  How does this affect students?  Students can be searched at school.  The Supreme Court established in the case, New Jersey v. TLO, the standard of reasonableness for searches of students conducted by public school officials in a school environment.

That means students and their belongings can be searched at school if there is reasonable suspicion.

The 5th amendment contains several important rights.  People have the right to a jury trial, not be tried twice for the same crime, not testify against themselves, not be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law, and they must be justly compensated for any private property taken for public use.  The Miranda Rights that police officers read to people under arrest were written by a Supreme Court justice in a case involving a man who testified against himself without knowing he had the right to remain silent.

September 17 –

Today is National Constitution Day.  This is our last announcement about the Constitution.  Here are two more very important amendments in the Bill of Rights that you should be aware of, numbers 8 and 9.

The 8th amendment states, “Excessive bail shall not required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.”  This is the shortest amendment, but one of the most important.   Cruel punishments such as caning and stoning are currently being carried out in other countries around the world, but Americans never have to worry about these types of punishments because of this amendment.

The 9th amendment states that the people shall retain any rights not listed in the Constitution.  Americans are some of the freest people on earth and are fortunate to have many more rights than others in the world.  We hope you have learned something new about the Constitution this week.

Class Officer voting is taking place this week.  Make sure you check your Google Classroom for your graduating class to vote.  Voting closes Friday at 2pm.  All students should be part of their grade level Google Classroom as many announcements and events are posted during the year.  See you SYNC teacher or the main office for the classroom code.

September 14
The Constitution written in Philadelphia in 1787 did not address the rights of individuals and this became a bone of contention during ratification.  The Antifederalists argued that a Bill of Rights must be included to protect these rights. Protecting citizens’ rights was not a new idea.  Many of the rights they sought were contained in the Magna Carta, which King John signed in 1215 to protect citizens against abuse of power by the King or Queen.  It was agreed that a Bill of Rights would be written, and its authors based it upon Virginia’s Declaration of Rights written in 1776.

September 15
Once drafted, the Bill of Rights was quickly ratified by the states.  One of the most recognizable amendments is the first.  It gives five freedoms to the people.  They are freedom of speech, press, religion, petition, and assembly.  Over time, these freedoms have faced challenges in the Supreme Court and their interpretation has been shaped by those decisions.  For instance, you can burn the United States flag as a statement of freedom speech, but you cannot make or write false statements about someone with the intent to damage their character.

September 13 -

September 17 is National Constitution Day.  Students all over the United States will be studying the Constitution this week.  55 delegates from 12 states wrote this document during the summer of 1787 in Philadelphia.  The Constitution was signed on September 17 by 39 of the delegates and sent to the states for ratification.  It went into effect the next year after 9 of the states approved it.  This week we will focus on the Bill of Rights, a very important addition to the Constitution.
