In celebration Black History Month, the Civil Rights team wants to highlight Lucy Stanton, who was the first African American to receive a four year degree from a university. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in a ladies literacy course at Oberlin College in Ohio in 1850. She would then move to multiple states, campaigning for abolitionism and antislavery. She even became the first African American to have a fictional story published in a newspaper, with a story about anti-slavery being published in Cleveland’s Aliened American. She also moved to Tennessee, where she became the president of a local Women’s Christian Temperance Union.

February is Black History Month. It is an annual celebration of the achievements made by African-Americans and the recognition of their role throughout our history. During the 1968 Olympic 200 meter medal ceremony, American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos wore black gloves and raised their fists to show solidarity with the ongoing civil rights movement in America after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Later in life, Tommie Smith described raising his fist as “a cry for freedom and human rights.”

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to join the Civil Rights team in celebrating Black History Month. Our Join the Conversation QR codes can be found around the schools as well as the bulletin board across the cafeteria. We hope to hear from you!

February is Black History Month. It is an annual celebration of the achievements made by African-Americans and the recognition of their role throughout our history.

Did you know that in 1926 Carter G Woodson established Negro History Week to highlight Black Americans' lives and contributions?

Since 1976 the week has expanded to a month.

Which African American person has inspired you?

Students, faculty and staff are invited to join the Civil Rights Team as we celebrate Black History month.

The QR code to Join the Conversation can be found on signs around the school and on our bulletin board. We look forward to hearing from you!

 Hello all!

Seacoast Park - Outing - February 2
We will be meeting in the parking lot at 5:00.  We can meet there and get tickets as a group.  I will also be keeping an eye on the temperature--I think if the wind chill/temp is below 20 we will not keep kids outside.  I will keep you updated. If we cancel, we will reschedule for the following week. - Advisor Braley
